Subject description

Entrepreneurial Management is envisioned as a highly interactive class, where students learn from each others’ experiences and class discussion (in the class and in working groups outside of class). In that sense, while I will do my best to provide you with interesting materials and facilitate discussion to highlight learning points, much of your learning depends on you: your preparation, active participation in class, and reflection after the class. Entrepreneurship is action-based and inherently experiential. Hence there will be no classic “stand-up lectures” where students act as passive recipients of knowledge.

Learning objectives

Upon the completion of this course, participants should:

  • - Understand the entrepreneurial mindset, and how best to align personal goals and motivations with that mindset;
  • - Learn how to recognize and explore problems and needs as sources of entrepreneurial

2 opportunities, understanding both the entrepreneur’s and customer’s perspectives; - Recognize the issues faced by Entrepreneurs when selecting and pursuing their goals, and acquire skills to resolve such issues as staffing, managing, financing and scaling an enterprise; - Understand the nature and purpose of a business model in the context of New Venture Creation and be able to generate, validate and present a compelling company by building the core elements of a Business Model; - Develop an awareness of the power of entrepreneurship to create sustainable and social value The written and video cases, workshops and class exercises will expose you to various viewpoints. Moreover, the settings you will be exposed to in the case studies cover a range of entrepreneurial contexts, from high technology to corporate ventures. By exposing you to a broad range of settings in which entrepreneurs operate, the intent is to break the persistent myth that entrepreneurship is limited to a few heroic figures covered in popular press, but if we so desire, it is accessible to all of us.

Subject description

This course covers the fundamentals of financial reporting. You will learn how to prepare a set of financial statements (balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement), analyze financial statements, and calculate and interpret key ratios. You will also learn to recognize the importance of judgment in accounting and its potential effects on financial statements.

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles, concepts, and techniques of financial or external accounting and reporting.

This course "Financial Reporting and Analysis" will adopt the perspective of the user of financial statements (analysts, banker, investor). This means the objective of the course is not to memorize accounting standards and perform the book-keeping. Although the course will include a thorough discussion of fundamental accounting concepts and standards, the aim is to familiarize you with accounting principles and processes to enable you to interpret and critically review financial statements.

Learning objectives

Understand the "language" of business, its uses and its limitations. × Develop a basic understanding of the accounting principles. × Explain why a published set of financial statements is always a choice, made by the company and/or by the × regulator, among a set of possible alternatives. Explain how economic transactions are processed through the accounting information system. × Prepare a set of basic financial statements. × Perform basic financial statement analysis. × Be familiar with the differences in various financial reporting environments. × Understand the role of financial reporting in the development and functioning of capital markets. × Develop an awareness of: (a) ethical dilemmas in financial reporting; and (b) sustainability reporting. × How to read and interpret those statements as the means to support financial decision-making. ×

The case describes the challenge Starbucks faces from Luckin coffee, a local start up in China.
Having entered China in 1999, Starbucks was the undisputed leader with more than 70% market share and 3600 cafes by 2018. While China/Asia Pacific was Starbucks' fastest growing market, the company faced a setback in the region in 2018. There was a decline in its third quarter sales, total number of transactions for the year, and the annual operating income. Starbucks' sudden downturn in the region could be attributed to the threat to its third place positioning by Luckin.

Subject description

2 Marketing is a set of skills, concepts, knowledge, analytical techniques and approaches that, when applied appropriately, can greatly improve the efficiency with which business is conducted. This course is designed to further develop these skills, techniques and approaches and to seek appropriate solutions based on reasoning and analysis.

Marketing is a business process that creates and delivers value to the needs of a target market. The marketing process involves identifying unfulfilled needs and desires of customers, measures and quantifies the size of the identified market and the profit potential, it pinpoints which segments the company is capable of serving best and it designs and promotes the appropriate products and services through various activities, such as advertising, promotions, public relations, influencer marketing etc. both online and offline.

Learning objectives

- To understand the marketing process, from analysis to implementation, in order to have a global vision of the Marketing function within the firm. - To introduce the basic principles of Marketing (Segmenting, Targeting and Positioning), and the key elements of the Marketing Mix (product, price, promotion and place) that enable the brand to implement a consistent and successful marketing plan. - To discuss models and tools that allow marketers to decide and control marketing activities. - To develop analytical and critical thinking skills for the analysis and solution of marketing problems. - To enable students to make decisions and develop strategies and plans based on careful analysis and to present and defend them in front of the different stakeholders. - The course includes, through different cases and sessions, the aspects of social and environmental responsibility that specific marketing decisions have for companies, consumers, and society

Overview People often define Marketing as advertising or sales - highly visible activities by which organizations try to persuade consumers to buy products and services. However, marketing is more than advertising and sales - even the most skillful marketing cannot make consumers buy things that they don’t want. Rather, marketing involves identifying consumer needs, and then satisfying these needs with the right product, available through the best distribution channels, promoted in ways that motivate purchase as much as possible, and priced at the right level. Learning objectives

- This course will enable students to take decisions, to develop marketing strategies based on a thorough analysis, and present their recommendations to different stakeholders. Specifically, the course objectives are to introduce students to:

  • - fully comprehend the marketing process from analysis to implementation with the aim to gain a holistic vision of the marketing function.
  • - know the basic marketing concepts (segmentation, differentiation and positioning) and the elements of the marketing mix (product, price, place, promotion) in order to implement a consistent and successful marketing plan.
  • 3- use different tools and models which support the process of marketing analysis and control.
  • - develop the skill of critical and analytical thinking through the application of marketing problems.

Subject description

No matter what your future managerial job will be, you are going to be responsible for some work that is done under your supervision. Operations management is the discipline of making sure that the work gets done in the best possible way, taking into account the circumstances and the goals of the organization. The operations management discipline is centered on designing, managing, and improving organizations' value creation processes. Some of you may become responsible for manufacturing processes, but for most of you, the work you will manage will be something else, for example, marketing, consulting, recruiting, or new product development processes. The principles and practices of operations management will be equally applicable to all processes regardless of what is done in them, including healthcare processes, where value is created by turning patients into healthy people, and consulting processes, where problems are turned into solutions. The efficiency, reliability, flexibility, resilience, and sustainability of all work processes depend on the managerial decisions and practices that will be studied in this course.

Learning objectives

The purpose of this course is to prepare you for the crucial managerial responsibility of ensuring that the processes under your control are contributing to the overall objective of your organization, be it profitability or something else (e.g., the best use of volunteers and donated materials in a charitable organization). More specifically, after this course, you should have learned:

The strategic role of operations management and how systematic process design can support competitive strategy How different operations management systems, including Lean and Agile, fit a given business environment What is the role of operations management in innovation processes, such as new product development Analyze the operations managerial arrangements of any business situation and prepare suggestions for improvement How operations managerial decisions relate to environmental sustainability and social responsibility

The Breakfast Cereal Industry
After pushing a bit further in defining the building blocks of strategy, we will start applying these logics to our first case on Industry Analysis: In this session we will apply the insights about the basic logics of strategy to understand why firms in a rather 'boring' industry such as cereals are able to maintain extraordinarily high profits for decades. Think of the following: Is the recent decrease in profitability a temporary phenomenon or a permanent change in industry profitability?
Calculate the cost of entry into this industry – is it a “Barrier to Entry”?
What is the implication of General Mill’s announcement at the end of the case?

INNOVATION STRATEGY, NETWORK EXTERNALITIES & PLATFORM MARKETS
This double-session revolves around key foundations of competitive advantage in high-tech, communication and especially Internet related industries. We will delve deeply into the underlying logics and apply them first to the case of Nintendo where we will take a good look at how this company managed to monopolize the video game industry in the era of 'Super Mario'; then we fast forward to analyze a very familiar firm, Apple, and its maybe somewhat less known friend/foe Adobe.

Market entry by innovation: Tesla
What is Tesla’s main competitive advantage?
What is the role of ‘complementary assets’ in this industry? Who owns them?
Tesla is clearly an example of entry by innovation into a market characterized by drastic changes. It currently commands a very high market capitalization but we ought to ask whether or not Tesla will indeed be able to reap most of the benefits of its innovations.

Subject description

The IE Center for Health and Well-being was created in 2019 with the mission of providing awareness and opportunities for students, staff, faculty and alumni of IE University to develop the skills necessary to help them study, live and be their best. The Center takes a scientifically grounded and holistic approach to enhancing well-being, performance and growth through simple, practical and sustainable educational programs. The Center strives to support your well-being through a diversity of initiatives such as the My Well-Being portal, our extensive learning experiences, volunteering initiatives, clubs, sports, music, creativity, community support and much more.

The 21st century needs a different type of leader, one who is grounded in their values, who has the ability to care for themselves & others and who is determined to positively impact our communities and world for better. Well- being in Practice is designed to introduce the concept of well-being and its impact on our ability to thrive, be healthy, feel good, connect with our self & others and to contribute to our learning, teams and community at IE & beyond.

The workshop focuses on how to develop skills to have a better life and invest in being your best self. We need to be present, curious and brave, to reflect and gain insights as to our values and what is important to being our best. We ask that technology be put away to focus our attention on increasing awareness of emotions and to train positive practices for flourishing. We also ask that we foster a safe environment for open dialogue, kindness and exploration around well-being and how we can build practices into each of our unique lives.

Learning objectives

Introduce the core values of the Center of Health & Well-being. × Increase awareness as to the inter-connection of body, mind and soul and the impact on the ability to × study and create a positive experience. Foster a healthy self-perception, appreciate values and take ownership to cultivate a pro- active × partnership in developing well-being. Motivate a personalized action plan to build well-being into our day-to-day life and routines. × Cultivate authentic awareness, connection and a culture of well-being. ×
